Medical teachers warn of strike in Gujarat

The Gujarat Medical Teacher's Association (GMTA) said its members "from 14 medical and three dental colleges" would go on an indefinite strike from March 22 if their demands, including UGC pay-scales for them, are not met.

Last year, the state's Health and Family Welfare Department had passed a government resolution (GR) to address GMTA's demands, but the association rejected it as "half-cooked", saying it was "not in accordance with UGC scales" applicable for other branches of higher education teachers.

GMTA president Dr Rajnish Patel said they would hold a protest in Ahmedabad this weekend. If that does not work, they would opt for an indefinite strike.

Patel said they have had five meetings with secretary-level officials of the H&FW Department, but to no avail.

The association also alleged that medical teachers were barred from receiving monthly salaries higher than Rs 75,500.

Rajesh Kishore, principal secretary at H & FW Department, refused to comment on the matter.
