To encourage industries in the state to reduce carbon emission to earn Certified Emission Reductions (CER), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) — in association with state Environment Directorate — is set to create awareness among the major stakeholders in this concern.

According to the proposal, the CII and the Environment Directorate will organise a conference in January 2010 to educate industries and concerning state departments about the procedures, the costs involved and the benefits that can be received from it.

Costing around Rs 4 lakh, the CII is seeking financial assistance from the state government to organise the meet.

“We have received the proposal, but are yet to finalise modalities like cost sharing proposed by the CII. The move will be beneficial as more industries, which do not have knowledge about the process, will benefit from it,” said Alok Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Environment.

As part of the process, industries reducing carbon emission can earn carbon credits, which can be sold in the global market. Around 200 representatives from various industries across the state, including key companies engaged as developers and traders, advisors, buyers and financers of carbon credits will participate in the conference.

“If we want to reduce carbon emission, then industries are the first targets. We will also involve other stakeholders associated with it, including the state government and various bodies like the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board,” said Anil Kumar Shukla, state head of CII.

Yashpal Singh, Director of the Uttar Pradesh Environment Directorate, said: “There are several industries that qualify for the procedure but are not earning carbon credits, as they do not have knowledge about it. The conference aims to help these industries.”
