Meghalaya politics in women's hands: Mahila Congress president

Politics in matrilineal Meghalaya lies in the hands of women as women voters not only outstrip men, but are politically more aware, All India Mahila Congress president Anita Verma said.

Meghalaya has more female voters (7,53,307) than male, "They (women) are more politically aware and the politics scenario lies in their hands," Verma said.

"You will see women coming out in large numbers voting for the Congress on February 23 and I am sure Congress will be able to form the government on its own," she said.

Verma expressed confidence that at least 90 per cent of the six women candidates fielded by the Congress would get through, if not all of them.

Pointing out that national issues would not be a factor in the upcoming polls, she said that people of the state would exercise their franchise keeping in mind local issues.

Verma says price rise cannot be stopped by anyone as it is a global phenomenon.

She said the Congress was banking on the schemes initiated by the UPA government at the Centre and the fact that the Congress had always been with hill states.

As the Congress was not a party based on caste or religion, Verma said people should vote for the party so that the state gained from the Centre.
