Mehdi Hasan has been elected the new chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan after current incumbent Asma Jahangir resigned to contest elections to the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Noted academician Mehdi Hasan has been elected the new chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan after current incumbent Asma Jahangir resigned to contest elections to the Supreme Court Bar Association.

The HRCP said its governing body elected Hasan, the senior most vice-chairperson,as head of the organisation by an overwhelming majority following Jahangir’s decision to step down as chairperson.

Hasan will serve for the remaining period of the current term. He will hold the post till a new chairperson is elected in spring 2011.

HRCP council members also elected Saleema Hashmi as vice-chairperson of the organisation’s Punjab chapter.

Though the HRCP constitution does not prohibit an office-bearer from contesting an election to a body such as the Supreme Court Bar Association,Jahangir opted to resign to avoid any possible conflict of interest.
