Member of snoop team, slain cop was told to maintain law & order

ASI Tapash Choudhury was a member of Special Branch (SB) of Kolkata Police, a specialised wing that was set up for the purpose of gathering intelligence and not to perform for law and order duties. But on Monday he was asked to come next day clad in white police uniform and report to Garden Reach police station amid tension in the area.

Significantly, there are recommendations of several committees on police reform which stated that the officers posted in the specialised branches like SB, Detective Department, Special Task Force should not be posted on law and order duties. The recommendations stated that the forces of investigation, intelligence gathering and law and order control should be segregated from each other. But over the years, the operational segregation has not been followed. Pallab Kanti Ghosh, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), however, said , "Police personnel from all units are posted in law and order duty as per requirement."

Cong demands Central intervention, CBI probe

Suri: State Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya on Tuesday demanded immediate intervention of the Centre to control the "wretched condition of law and order" in Bengal. Bhattacharya said the violent incident that took place in Kolkata on Tuesday was due to "negligence of police as they could not control the situation and act neutrally". He demanded a CBI probe into the incident.

City turning lawless, police mute spectators: CPM

Kolkata: CPM on Tuesday slammed the government for the violence. CPM central committee member Mohammed Selim said, "The incident proves that the city has turned lawless. The administration and the police have turned into mute spectators." Salim accused TMC minister Firhad Hakim of controlling goons in the area. Left Front chairman Biman Bose said in Malda that law and order has collapsed.
