The security forces late tonight called off its operation against militants who were holed up in caves inside a dense jungle near the LoC for eight days and said the ultras may have slipped out.

"The operation has been called off. The possibility of militants having escaped cannot be ruled out", said Defence Spokesman S N Acharya.

The encounter, which has been going on since January 1, has claimed the lives of four militants and three security personnel including a Junior Commissioned Officer.

The suspension of the anti-militancy offensive came after a major combing operation was launched by the army earlier in the day cordoning all sides of the area in Bhati Dhar forest belt to zero in on the militants who were sheltered in the caves, Brigadier General Staff, 16 Corps, Brig Gurdeep Singh told PTI here.

"We want to squeeze their space and then launch an assault. Troops have closed in on the cave hideouts after searching the forest belt around it", he said, adding that a go-slow strategy has been adopted in view of the heavy fog, dense forest and cave-like hideouts which provide a major shield to terrorists hiding there.

Police being questioned even as they lose their men: PMBy: Suresh Rao | 14-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward What a huge tragedy !!! I weep to hear that the terrorists have escaped. Why did'nt the Army call in the Air Force and destroy the caves with the 2000 lb guided bombs ?? All the terrorists would have perished in the attact and India and the world would have become a safer place. Why is it that even after so manyyears the Armed forces are still trying to be glory boys. Why can't they shed their differences and fight as a single seemless force ? Why ? Why ? Why ?
AFTER MUMBAI STILL HAVE NO LEARNED A LESSON-EQUIP THE ARMED FORCES WELLBy: ram | 10-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Equip your army with night vision etc./heat detection sensors etc for MODERN WARFARE or ask the IITs/Engineering colleges to design for the Indian armed forces so that it can be made in INDIA - cheaply.
Plug the loopholesBy: P.Kulandavelu | 09-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Army has to find out the loop holes that made the terrorists to slip away from their three tier corden and those loopholes to be plugged .In the near future if the same kind of attack comes, army should be in a position to nab those fugitives in a short time.Even now also army should make a thorough check of the caves as there may be chances for terrorists to hide in the same caves. Suitable bullet proof jackets can be supplied to to our army,to avoid loss of valuable lives of jawans which took place in this operation.I request army officers to press the Government and get army's genuine demands in protecting our country.Talibans are spreading every where. To meet them we must have the latest weapons than what they have.
DEF SPOKESMAN S.N.ACHARYABy: PCLUTHRA | 09-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward KINDLY PROVIDE REAL UPTODATE INFORMATION. INFORMATIO N TERRORISTS SLIPPED OUT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE REAL.
Mendhar operation called offBy: K.S.SRINIVASAN | 09-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Are'nt our security forces ashamed to admit that the terrorits holed up in Madhera might have slipped out while they have been claiming that the area has been surrounded from all sides and there are no chances for the terroists to escape. It is also surprising that they are calling off the operation without either capturing or eliminating the terrorists. This definitely calls for a probe.
