Mercedes Benz India to roll out locally assembled M-Class from Chakan plant

Auto major Mercedes Benz India on Wednesday announced the opening of operations of their new state of the art paint shop as well as rolling out the first locally assembled M-Class at the facility in Chakan.

The auto major had invested Rs 200 crore and is a 17,000 sq ft unit replete with features such as water-based painting technology and environmental friendly painting technology on board at the premises.

Piyush Arora, Director, Technical, Mercedes-Benz India, said, "The CKD assembling of the M-Class will be done with 30 per cent localisation. The axles and the drive-train will be sourced from our local markets here."

Mercedes-Benz India enjoys an 80 per cent market share in India. They will be rolling out the M-Class 250 CDI along with the M-Class 350 CDI. The foray also marks the setting up of new assembly lines, synchronised conveyor systems, latest technology roller testers and dynamic shower testers.

Arora said that they have a long-term plan as far as India is concerned wherein they will be bringing other India-specific cars from their roster internationally over the next few years. "The Indian market is maturing and over the next few years cars from the GL line will also be introduced here. The whole idea is to ensure not just profitable growth but sustainable growth," he said.

About the paint shop he said, "The key highlight is the flow of cars on the floor using the latest communication and tracking of every car using the RFID systems. This combined with high end checking labs equipped with the latest equipment ensures that the place is build to the global standards of Daimler."
