Meru Cabs plans rally of drivers who want to work

With its services coming to a near halt in the past one week due to the drivers' strike called by the Shiv Sena-led union, the Meru Cabs management has planned a rally in Malad involving all drivers who want to go against the union and get back on the roads.

The fleet taxi service, which said that 95 per cent of the drivers are not supporting the union, is expecting about 500 of its drivers to retaliate and participate in the rally.

"We have conducted a pre-recorded survey of all our drivers to understand how many of them are with the company and want to start work again," a Meru Cabs spokesperson said. "We have got a good response and will be sharing the results of the survey at the rally," she added.

The Meru Chalak Sena had called for a strike last Friday presenting a list of 21 demands to the management.

The demands were mostly related to reduction in subscription fee, payment of maintenance charges and other overheads, levying of penalties for misbehaviour with customers and weekly offs.

According to the management, most of the demands are unreasonable and a majority of its 1,500 drivers are satisfied with the company at the current terms.

Since Friday, the company said there have been more than 30 incidents where drivers going against the union and plying were assaulted, threatened or their vehicles were damaged.
