Many DTC buses ran empty following the implementation of the fare hike on Wednesday. Neeraj Priyadarshi

With new bus fares touching Metro rates, commuters take the faster option

With the hike in bus fares and its subsequent effect on Metro — overcrowding and delay — the city’s commuters had a tough time on Thursday.

Several Metro trains were delayed leading to heavy rush at stations. The lines concerned were the Yellow Line (Jahangirpuri-Central Secretariat) and Blue Line (Dwarka Sector 9-Yamuna Bank). The delay began in the morning and by afternoon, the situation had worsened, leading to overcrowding at several stations.

The stations of Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Chawri Bazaar and Chandni Chowk were choc-a-bloc and commuters could barely board trains or alight from them.

There were also complaints that the trains ran at a very slow speed and kept stopping at intervals.

“The train I boarded at Rajiv Chowk stood at the platform for over 15 minutes and even after it started running, it kept stopping every now and then,” said Deepa Saxena, a second-year student of Delhi University. “Announcements were made that a train ahead of ours had a technical problem, so our train had to be delayed.”

The crowd made the condition inside the train suffocating. “Repeated announcements were made apologising for the delay due to the slow speed of our train,” he added.

Pankaj Singh, a sales executive working in Chawri Bazaar, said: “I was delayed by over half an hour on my way to my office today. First, I missed a train at Rajiv Chowk as there was heavy rush and I could not even get into the train. Then the train I boarded was running at a very slow speed and kept stopping.”

    ... contd.

yeah rightBy: dude | 05-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward About 20 years ago when i was a student - when an ice cream used to cost 50 paisa - the pass of DTC was 12.50 . An ice cream now costs Rs 20 but guess what, DTC pass was still 12.50 till now. HOW on earth can a service continue if you expect everything free. Someone needs to help Indian masses understand that a FAIR price for a GOOD service is MUCH MUCH better than a FREE services that sucks!!!
Nonsense policyBy: Sunil | 06-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward This is the actual face of nonsense Congress party. Every time they do these type. In election they take money from big dealers. After win the dealers have free hand for doing anything. That is the reason why we have to suffer. Price of everything has gone up now. After generating a revenue of Rs 400 crore a year, this money will go to congress party fund. And even the case come to light, it will be closed. This is the true congress nature.
Who needs free rideBy: Ram Nath Babu | 05-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Time has changed man, nobody needs any free ride these days. But there should be some logic in the increase of fare. Why can't DTC introduce fares based on the Kilometer, rather than 'stage' system. The present structure is from one point to other, and thereafter, the fare virtually jumps! This should be done away with. The state transports charges between 30 to 70 paise, depending upon the buses. Let us the DTC charge 60 or 70 paise per KM, without fixing the fares.
