Traffic integration facilities would be provided at the metro stations to enable commuters to come and depart from the stations with ease, according to the detailed project report (DPR).

The DPR has proposed certain linkages that could be provided in order to enable the commuters to reach their destination. These would be through public and private transport as well as walk links. The report says linkages should be provided so that various corridors of the Metro Rail are integrated within themselves, with all existing rail services and road-based modes. The road-based transport would be public, hired and private vehicles. The facilities needed at the stations would be planned in conformity with the types of linkages planned. It is further proposed that walk links to provide access to pedestrians should be present.

The DPR has proposed traffic integration requirements for each station. Depending on the peak-hour station load at each of the 30 stations in 2041,the number of bays for buses,cars,two-wheelers,autorickshaws and cycles has been calculated.

Interestingly, the report has proposed a large number of cycle bays at every station, much more than those for cars.

In the North-South corridor from Capitol Complex to Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan, the highest peak-hour station load is expected at Sector 70,Mohali. As many as 7,646 commuters are expected, and there would be eight bus bays,612 car bays,2,039 bays for scooters,17 for autos and 1,529 for cycles.

Similarly,on the East-West corridor from Transport Terminal,Mohali to Grain Market,Panchkula, the highest peak- hour traffic is expected at the Railway Station — 6,570 passengers. At this station, seven bus bays,526 car bays,1,752 for two-wheelers,15 for autos and 1,314 for cycles have been proposed.

Among the other integration facilities are approach roads to the stations, circulation facilities, pedestrian ways and adequate circulation areas for various modes including feeder bus or mini-bus. Parking for private vehicles has, however, not been proposed.
