The Delhi Metro will throw open two of its much awaited corridors to public in the New Year the Qutub Minar-Gurgaon and the Inderlok-Mundka lines.
According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials, the lines are likely to be inaugurated by February-end,inching Phase-II to completion. The Kirti Nagar/Inderlok-Mundka line will be DMRCs first standard gauge line.
Earlier, these corridors were scheduled for commissioning in March 2010 but the deadline was later rescheduled.
Owing to its alignment with several malls in Gurgaon, the Qutub Minar-Gurgaon line is expected to attract many commuters, according to Delhi Metro officials. The line from Inderlok to Mundka will cover areas far into West Delhi,so far not really touched in depth by modern transport facilities.
According to DMRC estimates, the Qutub Minar-Gurgaon line is expected to serve 1.8 lakh commuters every day by 2011. The Corporation is expecting 2.5 lakh commuters to use the Inderlok to Mundka line by 2010.
Both the lines are significant and will change the face of Delhi, a DMRC spokesperson said. After these two lines are commissioned,Delhi Metros Phase-II will have just three more lines left.
According to the spokesperson,Civil work on both lines is nearing completion finishing touches are being given to the stations. Both these corridors have unique features, which will be seen for the first time in Delhi Metro and will come as a surprise for commuters.
The elevated 14.47-kilometre Qutub Minar-Gurgaon stretch will have nine stations and will be connected to Central Secretariat by June next year, according to DMRC officials.
Several stations on this stretch MG Road,IFFCO Chowk and HUDA City Centre will lead into malls.
The HUDA City Centre station, the terminating point of the line, will be the main highlight, according to the official. The station will have three-and-a-half floors above the track and three floors below it. A rooftop cafeteria will also be built on the station building.
This station has been planned as a green building, the DMRC official said. Its architectural and engineering details have been worked out in association with TERI.
The Inderlok-Mundka line will be Delhi Metros first standard gauge track, and trains on this track will be different than the usual Metro coaches, which run on broad gauge tracks.
The elevated 18.5-km stretch will have 16 stations,of which two will be built at the existing Inderlok and Kirti Nagar stations.
This line will be connected to Line-I and Line-III but since it will be standard gauge,Kirti Nagar and Inderlok stations will be connected with footover bridges, DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.
According to officials, all stations on this route have been constructed for six coaches,as standard gauge lines can accommodate only these many coaches.
