Rocked by a series of mishaps of late, two more accidents were reported from different Delhi Metro construction sites within a gap of six hours on Saturday.
In the first, a seeming repeat of the crane mishap on the Zamrudpur site in South Delhi on July 13, the boom of a crane lifting a smaller crane snapped and the crane overturned just after Saturday noon. The accident took place at the proposed Saket Metro station in Said-ul-Ajaib, close to the Qutub Minar.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said no one was injured.
In the second case, reported around 6.30 pm, a labourer fell from the overhead railway tracks at Akshardham Metro site and is admitted in hospital in a critical state. The labourer, identified as Bhuvan Bhumiya, 35, was working on electrocution of the line when he fell down, a police officer said.
“He was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital and is critical,” the officer said.
The accident occurred at the upcoming Metro line from Yamuna Bank to Noida.
The officer said investigations are on and no case has been registered. DMRC officials said Bhumiya is a watchman at the site and was not authorised to climb the overhead railway tracks.
Earlier, at the under-construction Saket station, a 50-tonne crane lifting a smaller capacity crane developed a mechanical problem and overturned.
According to witnesses, the bigger crane lost balance and toppled, and the smaller crane fell on the work site. The crane operator managed to abandon the vehicle just in time, witnesses said.
