Man found dead near Karkardooma station, crowd thought FIR wasn't registered: Police

A banquet hall under Karkardooma Metro station and a car were allegedly set ablaze by a mob in East Delhi on Saturday afternoon. This is the second instance of mob violence in East Delhi in three months. The previous incident was reported from Mayur Vihar, East Delhi, in September.

Saturday's incident took place around 3 pm, when they set Red Carpet Banquet Hall, under the Metro station, on fire. Sources said the violence was triggered allegedly after police refused to register a case and conduct the post-mortem of a 30-year-old man, who was allegedly beaten to death outside the Metro station on Saturday morning.

"Rakesh Kumar was found unconscious at 2.15 am outside Karkardooma Metro station. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A case has been registered under Sections 304 and 34 of the IPC. Efforts are on to establish how he died and to identify the accused," a police spokesperson said.

Kumar was a resident of Karkardooma village and used to work as a driver. Police claimed that they had registered an FIR, but the mob believed "a rumour that no case had been registered".

"We took the body for post-mortem but due to unavailability of space, the procedure was delayed by a few hours. At 3 pm, Kumar's family members and relatives burnt a car, vandalised the premises of the Metro station and set the banquet hall on fire," the spokesperson said.

As many as 12 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control.

The fire posed a threat to the safety of several Metro commuters too.

As soon as DMRC came to know about the fire, it stopped trains on the line. "We closed the station at 4.20 pm as soon as we received information that the violence had escalated. For the next two hours, trains were not plying on the Yamuna Bank-Vaishali Metro line. All other stations were opened after the fire was brought under control. Karkardooma Metro station was reopened only at 8.40 pm," DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.
