The Metro Rail, Kolkata, has withdrawn the new system of special ladies compartments in its trains with effect from September 8. The authorities have now decided to revert back to the old system of reserved seats for women in all compartments.
“After commuters started complaining that the new system was inconvenient for both men and women, we have decided to go back to the old system,” a spokesperson for Metro Railways said.
“Reserving two compartments for women at the two ends of the train served no purpose. Commuters arriving at the last moment and those in a hurry tend to board these reserved compartments,” said Ishita Sengupta, a daily commuter on the Shovabazar-Maidan route.
According to authorities, Metro motormen had to face the commuter’s fury, as the new system was chaotic. Moreover, with two compartments reserved for women, the other six used to witness a heavy rush of commuters. The Metro authorities had introduced the two reserved coaches for women on a two-month trial on September 1.
