The city recorded a rainfall of 64.37 mm in Colaba, 49.57 mm in the eastern suburbs and 43.3 mm in the western suburbs.

“There has been good rainfall in the city. Mumbai and its neighbouring areas of Thane and Palghar have been covered with rain,” said Deputy Director R V Sharma, IMD, Mumbai. He said that the heavy rainfall belt, which was earlier in Goa and Konkan, has now moved to Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. Regular showers will contniue till Monday evening. “There is a possibility that the rainfall will increase on Sunday,” he said.

However, civic officials said there was no rainfall in the Thane and Shahapur districts where Modak Sagar, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes are located. As per the BMC report, there were no showers near these lake areas till 3.00 pm. “It rained only in Vihar and Tulsi lakes in Mumbai. Only 0.02 metre rise is recorded in Vihar lake. However, there is a need for heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of other four lakes for the water level to rise and make a difference in water storage,” said Hydraullic Engineer S Korlekar.

Although civic officials said that the water situation remained worrisome, decision to impose additional 10% water cut will be taken by the civic standing committee which is scheduled on Monday. In the present situation, the total water storage through the six lakes can be sufficed for other 15 days.

However, the rainfall resulted in waterlogging in low lying areas. But there were no major complaints of traffic snarls. The Central Railway had delayed local train services between 9.00 am and 12.00 pm due to flooding of tracks at Kurla, Sion, Matunga and Chunnabhatti.

“We had given directives to drive the trains in slow speed. This resulted in 15-minute delay for every service,” said chief PRO Srinivas Mudgerikar.

Meanwhile, the BMC’s disaster management department informed that a 40-year-old woman, identified as Manjula Kandaswami Devendra from Shivajinagar, Govandi, died after receiving an electric shock. Ten-year-old Abdul Samad Khan, who was along with the woman, was also injured and is currently in hospital.

Monsoon-related ailments claim 3 lives
There were three deaths due to monsoon-related diseases on Friday and Saurday. A 35-year-old woman from Jogeshwari and a 50-year-old unidentified man died at the KEM and Nair hospitals due to fever. A 42-year-old woman died due to dengue at the JJ hospital. Currently, 24 BMC-run hospitals across the city have admitted 804 patients admitted due to fever, gastroenteritis, leptospirosis, malaria and dengue. Nearly 155 cases of fever, 44 cases of gastroenteritis and 39 cases of malaria were recorded.
