Following a request by the Gujarat government to further upgrade the security of its chief minister and BJPs prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked all states to extend him security cover whenever he is attending election rallies or meetings.
Modi, who already has Z-plus security cover by the National Security Guards (NSG),will be given the same kind of cover by the concerned state police wherever he is visiting,a senior official said.
In September, the Gujarat government had forwarded a request to the MHA to step up his security. We had written to the MHA for upgrading the chief ministers security whenever he is travelling outside Gujarat. The MHA said that apart from NSG,which is mandated to provide him security the concerned states where his visits are scheduled have also been asked to take the responsibility, said S K Nanda, additional chief secretary (home),Gujarat.
For short haul journey it will be the Gujarat Police and for longer journeys that extend beyond 24-48 hours, the concerned state police will have to be involved, said Nanda. An official added that under both arrangements, the NSG will be the common factor.
Soon after the BJP announced that Modi will be its poll campaign chief, the NSG,with the MHAs approval, doubled the number of personnel in Modis inner security cordon from 18 to 36.
In September, when his name was announced as the BJPs PM candidate, the NSG further improved his security by coordinating with other agencies.
At least 108 NSG personnel are dedicated to Modis close range security at present, including those who sanitize vehicles used by him to travel outside Gujarat.
