Persistent efforts and protests by the residents of Ambedkar Nagar Welfare Society under the leadership of Dr Surjit Singh, a social worker, against the poor quality of mid-day meals being served to the students in Government Primary School 1-B, have finally born fruit. The residents, it may be mentioned, had staged protest in this connection on September 25.
Talking to The Indian Express, Dr Surjit Singh said, “We brought the whole issue to the notice of Ludhiana deputy commissioner Vikas Garg, following which the quality of mid-day meals has definitely improved.
Earlier, half cooked food was being served to the little children, which on many occasions was also infested with worms,”
The residents are happy that the Parent-Teacher Association has also been dissolved and elections for the new PTA will be held on Saturday.
Dr Surjit Singh said, “We have heaved a sigh of relief after learning that the school’s head-mistress has been asked to report for duty at some other school. This school is now being managed by the second-in-command teacher. “
He said on September 18, an alternative inclusive education centre, which was being run near Lal Kothi in Model Town was closed on the orders of the old head-mistress. But following our requests to the administration, it has been started again where at present 70 children are being taught by two teachers.
