Asif Mohammad Khan, the sole RJD MLA from Delhi, has become the first politician to quit his party in support of Anna Hazare. Speaking to Newsline,Khan said he was “hurt” at the use of “unparliamentary language against Annaji” by his former party chief,Lalu Prasad Yadav.

“I submitted my resignation this morning. I have been forced to take this step since Laluji, who has always taken a strong stand against communalism, chose to side with those promoting corruption. I have been inspired by Annaji’s ideas,so I contacted his team yesterday,”said Khan,MLA from Okhla in South Delhi.

Criticising Hazare’s agitation, the RJD chief had last week said,“Parliament is supreme and civil society cannot give us dictation.”

Khan, who had been associated with RJD for the last eight to nine years, said he was also “hurt” by Imam Bukhari’s “allegations” against Anna.

“Kuch log mazhabi thekedar bankar musalmano ko is andolan mein shamil hone se rok rahe hai,” Khan said. He added that he will try to convince more Muslims to join the movement.

“No communal angle should be flashed in a critical issue like corruption,” he said. Speaking at Ramlila Maidan on Monday morning,Khan had said all MLAs must listen to their conscience rather than what their party high command dictated.

Appealing to other legislators to follow Khan,Arvind Kejriwal said: “Make your party understand that the whole country is waiting for Anna’s Lokpal.”
