  • Jammu and Kashmir National United Front (JKNUF) — a political party recently floated by Kashmiri Pandit migrants to exclusively take up issues concerning the displaced community — has decided to contest Assembly elections from atleast 15 constituencies in Kashmir valley. Sources said that the party finalised the candidates for certain constituencies on Thursday and the rest of the candidates would be decided in a few days.

It is the first time that the displaced community has decided to participate in the electoral process in a major way. Earlier, Kashmiri Pandit organisations stuck to giving boycott calls, reasoning that voting in exile for candidates in Kashmir holds no meaning for them. More than 72,000 exiled Kashmiri Pandit voters are scattered across the Valley, with the bulk of them concentrated in the constituencies finalised on Thursday. As per official sources, of more than 50,000 displaced Pandit families, 34, 608 are concentrated in Jammu.

JKNUF working president A K Dewani said that the chosen constituencies include Amira Kadal, Habba Kadal, Hazratbal, Batmalloo, Tral, Pulwama, Dooru, Handwara, Bijbehra, Wachi, Baramulla, Gulmarg, Sopore, Langate and Pahalgam. He also announced the five candidates finalised for the elections so far. They include Ashok Raina from Dooru, Desh Rattan Pandita from Wachi, Gulshan Sanotra from Baramulla, Rakesh Handoo from Hazratbal and RK Sehgal from Amira Kadal.

On a question whether candidates who are living outside the Valley and fighting elections for the constituencies in Kashmir would campaign in Kashmir, Dewani replied in the affirmative. “Away from the actual constituencies, we will be campaigning in migrant camps and other Pandit dominated areas in Jammu and elsewhere in the country. Apart from this we will also campaign in Kashmir, where constituencies are actually located. But the extent of our campaigning in Kashmir will depend on the security scenario”, he added.

IKF appeals for supporting their candidates in coming elections By: International Kashmir Federation | 15-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward International Kashmir Federation- IKF, an international body of Kashmiri Pandits supports the initiatives by community members to enter into the political arena in the upcoming elections. It is high time when Kashmiri Pandits start getting involved in a political process. This will eventually enable the community to return to their homeland in Kashmir valley with dignity. We must support a democratic process and participation in an election reinforces that commitment. IKF believes that a boycott of elections tantamount to playing into the hands of separatists, terrorists and anti-national elements of the state who have always been against the election process within the framework of Indian constitution. Kashmir is an integral part of India and the Kashmiri Pandits are the aborigines. IKF appeals to all Kashmiri Pandits to participate and support their candidates in coming elections so that the voice of Kashmiri Pandits can reach the State and Central Governments

pandits taking part in electionsBy: Rohit Tiku | 06-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward This is a fantastic step and I surely appreciate the efforts and courage of the people who have taken this initiative. Considering the possibility of boycott of elections by local population in some of these constituencies , it is quite possible that the party may be able to pull off a few wins on the basis of KP votes alone.;the way Raman Mattoo won the last assembly election in Habba Kadab by polling less than 1000 votes. It would then give our community some semblance of political power which otherwise has always been absent. Even a few seats would be quite useful for KPs to leverage and press for their demands especially in an assembly which is most likely going to be a hung assembly again. But for this to happen, all registered migrant voters need to come and vote and vote in unison for this party.
pandits taking part in electionsBy: M K Mattoo | 03-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward It is a very daring and welcome step taken by kashmiri pandits living in exile to show their interest and desire to establish their footing in the long vaccum created since their exodus from valley. By electionering and campaigning and raising their thoughts and voice will definetly be seen as a step towards move to our motherland, otherwise world over people presume that kashmiri pandits have no interest whatsoever now in the valley. This step could be seen and watched closely by all of us .The reaction and response of local muslims is to be seen keenly. It is a very good step to raise our voice in valley which we very rarely did even when we were living there . We were always the spectators there not actors. I wish all of you goodluck and pray to god to give you more strength and desire to act and raise our voice. All the Best and warm regards
