Militants ambush police vehicle in J&K village,kill four personnel

Four policemen were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was ambushed by suspected militants in North Kashmirs Hygam village

Four policemen were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was ambushed by suspected militants in North Kashmirs Hygam village on Friday. The suspected militants also decamped with two service rifles.

Sources said officials at the Pothkai police post on the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway received an anonymous call saying that a theft had taken place at Hygam village.

The suspected militants opened fire at the police party that reached the village,killing four of them on the spot. Police spokesman Manoj Kumar said,We lost four personnel and the attack is being investigated.

The police called the attack a trap and have detained Hygams sarpanch,who called the police to inform them about the theft in the village.

J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack on the policemen.

Soon after the attack,the police and Army cordoned off the area to trace the suspected militants.

The attack comes few days after the J&K police arrested a top Lashkar commander from Sopore and killed another militant from neighbouring Wagub village.

Sources said it could be an act of retaliation as the police has,of late,stepped up operations against militants in Sopore and its adjoining areas.
