The CBI probing into the death of IPS officer Narendra Kumar Singh has ruled out pre-planning by the mining mafia.
Singh (30) was killed while trying to stop a tractor carrying illegally mined stones near Morena in Madhya Pradesh on March 7. The CBI,which recently sought the custody of arrested tractor driver Manoj Gurjar, took him to the place of the incident and videographed the chase route followed by Singh on that night.
It was alleged that Singh was killed by mining mafia. The Madhya Pradesh government came under pressure to order a CBI inquiry. The agency took over the probe on March 15. Family members of the slain IPS officer have alleged that Singh was killed as he had started a crackdown on the mining mafias. Immediately after taking over the case, the CBI sent forensic experts from here to examine the spot. The team of experts also examined the postmortem report during which the injury marks were studied.
From the forensic examination and experts opinion,it was learnt that Singh,in order to stop the tractor, tried to board it. In order to save himself, the tractor driver pushed Singh, who lost his balance and fell down. Singh tried to roll and get out from the way but came under the wheels of the tractor. The first tyre marks on his body is of the bigger wheels of the tractor and as he rolled to save himself, the rear wheels of the tractor crushed him further. He died due to the impact of the fall. The driver did not hit him from the front, said a top CBI official heading the probe.
The agency examined several incidents in MP where policemen had died while trying to stop vehicles used in illegal mining. Investigators found that cops on duty have died while trying to chase such vehicles. The same logic was applied in the case of the IPS officers death. However,we have not found anything so far to connect these incidents and the involvement of the driver who is under arrest. We are yet to finalise our probe and a chargesheet against the driver may be filed by the end of this month, added the official.
The agency detailed the sequence of events on the night of March 7. It was learnt that Singh, acting on a tip-off,chased the tractor-trolley carrying stones and ordered the driver to stop. The driver tried to speed off on which Singh instructed the nearby police post to barricade the road. Finding his way blocked, the driver took his vehicle into the farm lands. At this point,Singh chased him and tried to board the tractor. The driver tried to flee leaving his tractor, after he discovered that Singh had been badly injured. However,he was overpowered and arrested, stated the officer.
