After the Howrah-Digha train she launched a few days ago, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated Kolkata’s first site office for Circular Railway at Majerhat station on Tuesday.
The city already has separate offices for the Metro Railway and the Eastern and South Eastern Railway. To boost communication in North-Eastern states, the new office will have a special officer to look after the region.
The Railways also plan to start a new railway line from Lumding to Silchar and convert the dilapidated buildings under the department into community centres. A P Roy Hall near Majerhat railway station, for instance, will undergo renovation and a community hall is likely to be set up near Tollygunge railway station.
Banerjee also mentioned her plans to make the railways more efficient. “I want to attain 85 per cent punctuality. We have formed punctuality machinery whereby general managers of all the railway zones will have to submit a weekly report on the running of trains,” she added.
“Foreign tours of railway officials will be curtailed and the money will be spent on infrastructure and passenger amenities,” she added.
