Aleph is a solo photography exhibition of self-portraiture by Navdeep Sandhu, who describes it as a personal journey. “I’m an expressive and spontaneous person. Here I have given my emotions a visual form through these 33 photographs,’’ says the former journalist, who now keeps herself busy with teaching and theatre.

Sandhu’s visualizations are interesting— the contrast of light and shade throwing up enigmatic silhouettes in black and white. “I live in extremes, using monochromes allow me to express the highs and lows I experience,” she says. It took her more that a year to put her first solo show together.

Creative visualisations apart,self-portraiture also had its own share of challenges. There are just about ten seconds to get the expression, props and the focus right. “If you have a model you can tell himher to make adjustments. In this case there were several occasions when I had to struggle with myself to get everything right in the stipulated time,” she says. The exercise, she said, helped her to focus on her inner self.

Many ideas, she smiles, did not work out,and out of sheer frustration, she shot some crazy pictures of herself, with different kinds of make-up,“almost to tell the camera how much trouble it’s giving me.” “My focus is raw,as are the frames, for I am not portraying something beautiful, but real,” she says. Next on her agenda is fashion photography.

The show is on at The Museum Art Gallery till May 16.
