Bolero carrying seven teens to Bhiwandi crashes into truck; police say driver was drunk.
Six teenagers on their way home from a garba event were killed and one injured when their jeep crashed into a container truck on the Bhiwandi-Vasai Highway near Kaman early on Wednesday. The driver of the truck also suffered injuries and is admitted at a private hospital.
Police said the driver of the Mahindra Bolero (MH02 AY 5189), Ashish Tangdi, was drunk. According to the highway police officers, Tangdi was speeding and lost control of the vehicle, which hit a divider before crashing into the truck (HR67 AO 612) coming from the opposite direction around 1.30 am. The impact was such that the Bolero turned turtle, killing the driver as well as five passengers.
The deceased have been identified as Vaibhav Raikar, Kundan Raikar, Ashish Tangdi, Devendra Tangdi, Yagnesh Devlekar and Kaushik Patil (all aged 17 to 19 years). They were residents of Payegaon area in Bhiwandi. The six had gone to Kaman village to participate in a garba event.
Sangramsinh Nishandar, additional Superintendent of Police,Vasai Circle, said Tejas Ramesh (17), who was also in the Bolero, suffered grievous injuries and was admitted to a private hospital in Bhiwandi. Police have registered a case of death due to negligence against Ashish. "We are finding out if the accident occurred due to human error or mechanical failure. RTO officers will inspect the jeep," said Nishandar.
