After a shaky start one-and-a-half-months ago in implementing the ‘Mission 10th Pass’,the Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM),which hopes to inculcate traffic discipline among the citizens through dosages of traffic rules,is planning to make a comeback soon. SPTM has started reaching out to masses, giving them lessons in the traffic rules through e-mails and other media.

The SPTM has planned the ‘Mission 10th Pass’ campaign urging people to follow 10 basic traffic rules,step-by-step,one at a time, like stopping the vehicles at the traffic signals before the stop-line,not using mobile phones while driving,no parking on footpaths.

The long-term campaign aims at improving the traffic scenario. At the end of the mission,SPTM hopes to discipline people and declare Pune as ‘10th Pass’,as far as following simple traffic rules is concerned.

However, when the campaign was launched on May 11,it had to be wound up,as the necessary infrastructure such as zebra crossing marks were missing on many roads. The mission was put on the backburner.

“It was true that we had a bad start. Though we launched the mission in May,we soon realised that the basic infrastructure needed to roll out our campaign was not in place. This campaign also witnessed hiccups with the sudden change of guard at the Pune Municipal Corporation, with Praveensinh Pardeshi leaving,” said Harshad Abhyankar,of SPTM.

“Despite the time lapse,we kept circulating copies of various rules regarding traffic discipline and driving rules among various communities, including youth in the IT sector. We have been sending mails to these people, which provide basic information about traffic rules in a fairly elaborate way,” Abhyankar said.

“Many youngsters have been guided about these rules,” he said, adding that the new civic commissioner Mahesh Zagade will hold a meeting to discuss the mission plan on Tuesday.
