Winter-festive it may be,but designers are on their own creative trips
Riddhi and Siddhi Mapxencar:
The designer sisters already have a Bollywood following-Mugdha Godse was spotted in one of their creations-but it isnt just the razzle dazzle that got these two selected for the Gen Next category. Their interpretation of architect Daniel Libeskinds unique folded and layered style of building speaks for itself. In the expert and imaginative use of boxy little pockets on the sleeves and hems of their garments, the sisters showed that structure can be stunning without being restrictive.
Asmita Marwah: Sunny St. Tropez met Goan flower child at Asmita Marwahs collection of flirty and feminine resort-wear. Its a collection for the woman who is confident enough about her body to cover it with billowing swathes of fabric with no noticeable waist,as her loose gypsy tops and tent skirts hide more than they reveal. Her take on the sari, with its skimpy blouse and non-traditional fabric combination,is more relaxed and bohemian.
Jelin George:
One look at Gen Next-er Georges collection and we were thinking about Glenn Close from Fatal Attraction. With the stiffly structured shoulders and razor sharp cuts, the collection tipped its hat to the power suits of the 80s. No lace and leather Madonna with peroxided hair can compete with Georges dominatrix, wielding a baton and wearing a natty top hat. The look was kept contemporary and rooted with a judicious use of mirror work.
Forme by Soumitra:
In an age when textile gets the short shrift in favour of embellishment,Soumitra Mondals exquisite saris and kurtas stand out for their understated elegance and prove that khadi is not just for politicians. Richly dyed in natural colours and using only minimal surface embellishments, the collection spoke strongly, but quietly, for fashion with good taste and a conscience.
