MMRDA shifts blame onto UDD

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority — which submitted an affidavit to the Adarsh inquiry commission on Wednesday

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) — which submitted an affidavit to the Adarsh inquiry commission on Wednesday — claimed it had sought a clarification from the Urban Development Department (UDD) in December 2005 on why the proposed height of the building was 93.80 metres when the permissible height was 42 metres as per the Development Control Regulations.

The UDD replied six months later, saying the permission was granted after merging the floor space index of the adjoining BEST depot plot with the Society’s plot.

On the issue of reducing the width of Captain Prakash Pethe Road adjoining the Adarsh building, the affidavit states that the MMRDA had sent letters to the UDD in June and September 2001 to reconsider its directive to reduce the width of the road. The UDD,however, did not reply, states the affidavit filed by Pradeep Yadav,Senior Planner in the MMRDA’s Town and Country Planning division.

The MMRDA also said the Adarsh Society claimed an incorrect deduction in space to be kept aside as recreation ground area to get permission to build more floors. According to the affidavit, the Society made this request in a letter to the planning authority dated January 2,2009,incorrectly claiming 15 per cent deduction for recreation ground area.
