MMRDA status report ready, to be made public

Even as the ruckus over the irrigation white paper dies down, another white paper is ready to be presented to the public. The 'status report' on work done by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) over the last few years is ready to be presented to people, a senior government official said.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who heads the MMRDA, had recently indicated that the MMRDA status report is ready to be made public. In September 2012, Chavan had ordered that a 'white paper' on MMRDA be prepared so that people even in rural areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) know about its work.

This was after NCP ministers raised the issue in cabinet after a bridge collapsed at a Metro construction site in Andheri, killing a worker and injuring 16 people. It was the eighth metro-site accident.

Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil, who is the Guardian Minister for Mumbai, had said crores had been spent on projects such as BRIMSTOWAD to prevent water-logging in the city. However, even short spells of rain flooded many areas. He questioned the spending and work done by the MMRDA.

Chavan said, "MMRDA has done good work to improve infrastructure in Mumbai. A white paper is not an acceptance of wrongdoing but a presentation of facts."
