After putting up posters urging people to attack the Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar for poor medical services,Maharashtra Navnirman Sena MLA Ram Kadam led a mob of 300-odd people and stormed the hospital on Tuesday morning. Labelled as the ‘Rajawadi tod-fod morcha’,the protest was called by Kadam after the hospital failed to provide prompt treatment to 11 persons, including a seven-year-old girl, who were mowed down by a car in Ghatkopar last Friday.

“There was a small child among the injured too. It is expected that when such a major accident occurs, the hospital should be equipped to handle such situation. The purpose of the agitation is to ensure that the hospital provides prompt treatment in the future, especially when it is one of the few big hospitals in the vicinity,” Kadam said.

On Monday, medical director Dr Sanjay Oak had asked Kadam to call off the morcha and promised formation of an inquiry committee to look into the matter. Kadam, however, declined Oak’s offer and went ahead with the agitation.

However, contrary to what the name suggested, the morcha did not see any violence. After an hour of gathering people and shouting slogans in the vicinity of the hospital,Kadam met hospital authorities to discuss the issue. Medical superintendent Dr Vijaya Bhatt and medical superintendent of peripheral hospitals Dr Seema Mallik attended the meeting.

“There was a general discussion asking for upgrade of facilities. A 24/7 neo-natal intensive care unit and a dialysis unit were demanded, both of which have already been started. The number of beds in the ICU will also be increased soon. A major point of contention was lack of staff for which we have planned to fill all vacant posts by monthend,” Mallik said.
