Mild tremors were felt across Mumbai and several other parts of Maharashtra on Saturday following a moderate earthquake in Koyna region, 200 kilometres south of Mumbai.
Dr R V Sharma, director of India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) western region, confirmed that an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale had occurred in the region. “It was a moderate earthquake with its epicenter in Koyna dam region in Satara district,” Sharma said. The quake occurred at 6:36 pm and lasted 15 seconds.
Tremors were felt in parts of Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Ratnagiri and Kolhapur regions. S C Mohanty, officer on special duty in the disaster management cell of the Maharashtra government said, “All officials are rushing to the site but as of now there are no reports of any casualties.”
