Hotel Shivalikview's much-needed makeover puts it back in the game
IT'S one of the oldest properties of CITCO (Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation) in the city that's managed to dish out enviable banqueting facilities and a please-all buffet. Its location has been its biggest advantage as well. However, Hotel Shivalikview, as most would agree, hasn't been a great looker with its interiors, especially the lobby giving it a dated look. While the old world charm can work in some places, in case of Shivalikview, it would be best described as dowdy. Further, a tiny coffee shop was packed within the environs of a restaurant. Given the fast changing face of hospitality in the city, it was time for the hotel to give itself a makeover. After being under wraps for a while, the refurbished Shivalikview has opened doors and the modern, contemporary look is impressive indeed.
The change can be seen from the porch itself, where a grand water body and extended parking space is visible. Step inside and it's hard to fathom that this is the same hotel. There seems to be a conscious effort to look contemporary without leaning towards any one type of theme. The international traveller will appreciate the clean, modern, no-fuss look. Though the roof top restaurant Cloud 9 was unveiled a few months ago, this time it's the multi-cuisine restaurant Bazm and the all-new coffee shop Le Café that's breathing a new look. The lobby area and the restaurant, with a coffee shop alongside, are designed to have the appearance of one continuous connected space so that hotel guests can comfortably move between these various spaces. While Bazm is clearly distinguished as a fine-dining restaurant with elegant seating, richer hues and intricate filigree work used throughout the space, the café has a more casual feel despite the bright modern being retained. Though the ambience is definitely cheerful and inviting, we wish there were some elements of the city or Le Corbusier that were also incorporated here.
