  • All India Congress Committee General Secretary and the party's Gujarat unit in-charge P Sudhakar Reddy visited the various hooch-affected areas in the city and met the family members of the victims, on Friday.

A total of 113 people have lost their lives till Friday evening following consumption of spurious liquor, flooding the state's commercial capital.

He told Newsline after visiting the families of the deceased that the government should pay an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh depending on the age of the deceased and their family responsibilities.

He justified the demand for financial assistance from the state government. He said it is the responsibility of the state to look after the dependents of the deceased persons as they had died by consuming liquor when there is a ban on the sale of liquor in the state. He said it is the duty of the state to ensure that such stuff is not made available to the people at all.

"It is really shameful that liquor is freely available in Gandhiji's Gujarat. It is nothing but failure of the Narendra Modi government," he said.

He also sought the sacking of state Home Minister Amit Shah, adding that it is his ministry which is directly responsible for enforcing prohibition in Gujarat.

He added that the state police are yet to arrest the kingpins of bootlegging, Rasik Parmar of Mehmedabad and Sukho of Daman, both of whom are linked with the BJP.

"Sukho is reported to be a BJP office-bearer of Daman unit, while Parmar is the sitting BJP corporator in the Mehmedabad municipality," Reddy said. He added that Parmar was earlier booked under PASA, but is yet to be arrested.

He said the state government should at least own "moral responsibility" for the tragedy.

Modi, his ministers and party leaders must at least visit the affected families to give them solace, Reddy said, adding that he has expressed condolences to the families on behalf of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
