IN the backdrop of pressure from NDA allies like the Shiv Sena and JD(U) seeking clarity from the BJP on its prime ministerial candidate, Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP heavyweight Narendra Modi today sought to flaunt endorsements by former Supreme Court Judge V R Krishna Iyer and former Central Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal on his wider acceptability as a "humanist wonder" and an "excellent example".
Stating that he has been the "target of several lies, exaggerations and half-truths" from "those with a destructive mind", Modi sought to counter the "mistruths" by publishing the contents of letters from Iyer and Vittal in his latest blogpost on the occasion of his birthday today.
"I hold you as a great man, a creative administrator and a humanist wonder. How I wish the Indian political leadership had the same inventive or at least innovative march with one vision: to wipe every tear from every eye," reads one of the letters from Iyer sent last month.
The letter was apparently sent in response to Modi's communication to Iyer informing him about his recent initiatives in harnessing solar power. Lauding Modi's initiative, Iyer's letter adds: "I pray for your leadership of Indian welfare. May that day dawn..."
In a separate letter quoted in the blog, Iyer says: "I hold you as a part of Indian history in its modern development odyssey. You are a super patriot and your stature is beyond any particular party... Do continue the national mission you have undertaken. Indian history of the 20th century will not be complete without an excellent reference to the majestic contribution you have made in the field of Indian Energy Unlimited."
Former CVC N Vittal, in his letter, has also praised Modi for his "commitment to good governance" and his "political courage" in taking decisions for good governance. "You have set before our nation an excellent example of what can be achieved if absolute political integrity and commitment to good governance are combined in a leader.
