Gujarat-cadre IPS officers Kuldip Sharma (Additional Director General in Bureau of Police Research and Development) and V K Gupta (CBI special director) retired from the service on Monday.

Sharma, a 1976-batch IPS officer, had accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of downgrading his Annual Confidential

Report which, according to him, cost him promotion to the post of director general of police (DGP).

He had moved the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in this regard, alleging that he was being penalised for revealing the alleged misdeeds of state ministers and businessmen close to the government. Despite being the senior-most IPS officer, Sharma was made MD of the Sheep and Wool Development Corporation, a post occupied till then, by IAS officers.

The SC had taken cognizance of Sharma's petition and ordered the state government to change his internal assessment markings from 'very good' to 'excellent'. The government was also asked to withdraw the charges levelled against Sharma in an encounter case of Kutch and upgrade his rank.

The government, however, did not promote Sharma. He went to New Delhi on deputation even as his battle for promotion continued.

In November, the Delhi High Court allowed the Centre's plea to promote him to the post of DGP.

In CBI, Gupta supervised the 2G spectrum and Commonwealth Games scams. Gupta has the distinction of being the first CBI officer who was trained in the FBI National Academy in the US in 1993.

A 1977-batch IPS officer, Gupta was commended for ensuring strict law and order in Surat during the 2002 statewide riots as the then police commissioner.

Later, he was transferred to the Central Vigilance Commission and then proceeded to the CBI as an additional director. He was subsequently promoted to the post of special director. He was among the six shortlisted candidates for the top CBI post.
