  • The lawyers practicing at district courts in Mohali and other sub-divisional courts in Kharar and Dera Bassi observed a strike on Wednesday to protest against the alleged corruption in the judicial system, which was recently exposed by a section of the media.

This is the second time that the local lawyers have abstained from work.

Led by District Bar Association president Avtar Singh Sidhu the lawyers staged a dharna outside the courts complex and also raised slogans against the corrupt judicial officers for not taking any note of the serious allegations against the judicial system.

Addressing the protesters, Sidhu and other senior lawyers, including Amrik Singh, demanded the setting up of the National Judicial Commission to take over the charge of appointments, transfers and action against judicial officers. “In the absence of any stern action, this could result in a major backlash in the country,” Sidhu said. He also led the protest in Kharar while Jasbir Singh Chouhan, the local Bar Association president, was at the forefront in Dera Bassi.
