Mohali not big enough for Municipal Corp

Mohali has sprung a surprise by recording the highest population growth rate of 32.02 per cent in Punjab over the last decade but its population is still far less than the minimum requirement for a Municipal Corporation city.

Clocks highest decadal growth of 32.02% but city’s population still below required 3 lakh

Mohali has sprung a surprise by recording the highest population growth rate of 32.02 per cent in Punjab over the last decade but its population is still far less than the minimum requirement for a Municipal Corporation city. Despite achieving almost double the state’s decadal population average of 17.64 per cent and population density going up from 2001’s 629 to 830 per square km,the five-year-old district headquarter Mohali’s population is still below 3 lakh, which is the minimum population required for any city to get Municipal Corporation status.

However, the SAD-BJP combine government had already accorded Municipal Corporation status to Mohali in January when the Census-2011 operations were still underway. “It is the discretion of the state government to make relaxation in this law provision when it intends to establish Municipal Corporation at a place which has less than minimum required population in a special case,” clarified a senior state government official, while reminding that in a similar manner,Punjab government had formed Municipal Corporation in Bathinda when its population was less than 3 lakh mark.
