Mohali youth drowns in Siswan dam

Parul (20),a resident of of Phase 3-A in Mohali,drowned in Siswan dam on the outskirts of Chandigarh on Sunday. He,along with five friends from the neighbourhood,had gone on an excursion to the picturesque semi-hill area in the Shivalik foothills,when he slipped into the water and got stuck in the mud underneath,Mullanpur SHO Vijay Kumar told the Newsline.

The incident took place around 1 pm. Divers were called from Ropar but they reached the spot around 4.30 pm and Parul had breathed his last by then. His friend Aman,from the same locality,dared to save Parul by throwing his turban towards him,but instead started getting pulled towards Parul himself.

One of his other friends disclosed that initially two locals had dived into the dam after Aman failed to rescue Parul,but they could not locate him. Since no divers were available at Siswan,local police called divers from Ropar,who took over three hours to reach.

After initiating inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC,local police shifted Paruls body to Civil Hospital for autopsy,which will be conducted tomorrow. Paruls father Ram Gopal and elder brother Tarun also reached the spot. He was pursuing diploma from the Food Craft Institute in Sector 42,Chandigarh,after completing his senior secondary studies from the Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 44.

A pall of gloom descended on Paruls house,where his mother and other family members were inconsolable.

FOURTH DROWNING

Parul was the fourth Mohali youth to have drowned since December 2008. Assem Gill (24) an engineer of Phase 3B2,had drowned in Goa in December 2008. Rajdeep Singh (25) of Sector 71 had drowned in Piha sea in New Zealand in April 2009. Sahil Sharma (19) of Sector 68 had drowned near Rajpura in August 2009.
