Moisture found in 30% of wheat flour samples at PDS depots

Approximately 30 per cent of the wheat flour samples tested from various Public Distribution System depots failed to comply with the norms of moisture content.

Approximately 30 per cent of the wheat flour samples tested from various Public Distribution System (PDS) depots failed to comply with the norms of moisture content. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ramesh Dhawala said the moisture was due to negligence on part of the flour mills, adding that no case was registered under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act since no serious adulteration was found in the flour.

The department has issued a warning to the flour mills supplying flour with moisture to PDS depots. These mills are being supplied wheat procured by the state through the Food Corporation of India.

Replying to a ‘call-attention motion’ brought by Congress MLA Kaul Singh Thakur,Dhawala said the government was alert over the issue of adulteration in essential food items. He said the government had stopped wheat supply to habitual defaulters. During checks by his department last year, the minister said,a penalty of around Rs 11.54 lakh was charged from errant shopkeepers selling food items in violation of rules. He said a food testing laboratory would come up in Shimla.

Earlier,Kaul Singh alleged that state government had failed to provide quality food items, specifically wheat flour, under PDS. He said the mill owners were misleading the government by supplying poor quality wheat to the PDS shops and hoarding the better quality grains. He said excessive moisture in flour caused fungus, leading to food poisoning.
