Two unidentified bike-borne men allegedly robbed a money exchanger at gunpoint in the South Extension area on Friday night. Police said the man was robbed of Rs 23 lakh around 8.30 pm.

Kamal Chandra (52) owns a money exchange store in E Block, South Extension Part II. He was robbed while he was heading to the parking lot after closing the shop.

Narrating the sequence of events, a police officer said, "Chandra left the shop with a briefcase and went towards his Honda Civic, which was parked barely 100 metres away from his store. When he was about to enter the car, he met one of his friends and struck up a conversation. The briefcase was in his hand."

"After 10 minutes, his friend left and two bike-borne assailants, who were probably following him, pointed a gun at him and robbed him," the officer said.

According to eyewitnesses, Chandra resisted the robbery attempt and shouted for help. On hearing him, one Arun, a worker at Chandra's store, hit one of the assailants with his steel tiffin box. The assailant reportedly fired one round in the air to scare Chandra and Arun.

The assailants then got onto their bike and managed to escape with the briefcase, police said. A passerby made a PCR call around 8.30 pm.

"A team of policemen were sent to the spot and statements of eyewitnesses were recorded. The CCTV camera near the parking area has recorded the incident. The assailants were not wearing masks. We are trying to ascertain the identity of the assailants and hope to solve the case soon," a police officer said.

Sources said CCTV footage showed one of the assailants in the area before the robbery. The assailants knew that Chandra took the week's collection home every Friday, police said.
