  • In the science-fiction hit Planet of the Apes, the simians had taken over the earth and made humans their slaves. The same theme seems to be repeating in City Beautiful with monkeys terrorising residents with frequent alacrity.

Around two weeks ago, a gardener was bitten by two monkeys while he was washing a car at a Sector-8 residence.

“A group of 10 monkeys suddenly descended and attacked me. As I tried to save myself, two monkeys clung to my legs and bit me. I was scared out of my wits; I could not figure out what to do,” recalled Arvind.

The owner of the house where Arvind works, B N Kataria, said they have been running from pillar to post for Arvind’s treatment that would cost approximately Rs 20,000. “The vaccines are very expensive and it is very difficult for a poor person to undergo treatment. The Administration should take some steps to ensure relief for such patients,” he said. This is, however, not an isolated case.

A fortnight ago, a monkey reportedly attacked residents of a house in Sector 15 and bit a child.

Children playing in parks are also vulnerable and easy targets.

The monkey menace is grave in the northern sectors with a number of complaints of monkeys snatching food or entering houses.

Experts suggest that in case of a monkey bite, the wound should be washed thoroughly with water.

In order to prevent bites, eatables should not be offered to monkeys. Care should be taken not to leave garbage in the open as it would attract simans.

    ... contd.
