With the monsoons having finally arrived, the city recorded 82.40 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours against the season’s total of 87.50 mm. While 24 trees were uprooted in the storm, incidents of land/road caving in were reported from as many as 26 places. However, there were no reports of any casualty.

A major fire reportedly broke out due to a short circuit at Nirman Complex in Ghatlodia area on Friday evening while three youths were trapped in a lift of J B Tower opposite the Doordarshan building in the early hours of the day.

A 25-foot deep and 15-foot wide pit was formed due to the rains near Vadaj circle. This crater was among the 26 formed at various places, most of them being in the west zone of the city.

Taking the civic administration to task, AMC Congress leader Surendra Baxi blamed this on largescale digging for stormwater drainage lines.

“All claims of the official machinery having taken adequate measures to deal with the situation have been wiped out after merely one heavy shower,” Baxi said

He added that areas like Gomtipur, Anupam Cinema, Khokhra, Bhuyangdev, Paldi, Sarkhej, Vejalpur, Usmanpura, Naranpura, Prem

Darwaja, Danilimda, Amraiwadi, Sabarmati and 132 ft Ring Road have been inundated and rendered unsafe after the rains.
