Monsoon Ragas

While the monsoons bring connotations of wet earth and thundering clouds,it’s the monsoon ragas that push the right buttons.

While the monsoons bring connotations of wet earth and thundering clouds,it’s the monsoon ragas that push the right buttons. The all-India music festival “Barkha Ritu” welcomes the rains with ragas such as Sur Malhar,Megh Malhar and Ramdasi Malhar on July 13 at Kamani auditorium.

“Barkha Ritu is a celebration of monsoon and brings alive Indian classical ragas that are sung during this time. It is a reminder about our own tradition,” says Mahesh Babu, festival director.

The artistes who will perform this year include Pandit Chhannulal Mishra and Ustad Shujaat Khan along with guitarist Prasanna. Mishra will set the mood for the evening with his unique blend of Banaras and Punjab gharana gayaki in his khayals, thumris, bhajans and various monsoon melodies. The highlight of the festival — the jugalbandi between north and south Indian music — is a first of its kind in its 12-year history. The strains of the sitar by Khan, one of the finest north Indian classical musicians and son of the legendary maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan, will meld with riffs played by Prasanna, who plays Carnatic music on the electric guitar.

The festival will be held at Kamani Auditorium,Copernicus Marg on July 13 at 6.30 pm.
