Monsoon may arrive in India on May 25 this year,a week before schedule, the Indian Meteorological Department has said in its April forecast.
What comes as a bigger relief, especially for the agriculture sector that mainly runs the Indian economy,is the met office forecast that it would be a near normal monsoon this year.
We have studied various factors and it is highly possible that the monsoon will set in a week earlier than usual according to these preliminary observations, said Dr S Pai,director of the National Climate Centre at Punes IMD.
The scheduled date for onset of monsoon is June 1. Last year, the monsoon touched the Kerala coast on May 31,only a day in advance.
Pai added that the early arrival of the monsoon will definitely bring some respite to the prevailing heatwave conditions across the country.
According to the long range monsoon forecast issued by the IMD,the season will be 96 per cent of the 50-year average. The central region may receive more showers than last year, while it may be the same in the southern parts of the country.
