The south-west monsoon will not touch Mumbai by June 10,the normal onset date when rainy season officially begins in the city, the IMD confirmed on Monday.
Despite making a promising start and reaching Karnataka nearly 20 days before time, the monsoon development has weakened this year, thanks to several factors including the cyclone Aila over the Bay of Bengal last month, and a weak current persisting now.
K Sathidevi, director of IMD Mumbai said,Last week, the monsoon did advance over the western coast, reaching Goa and Ratnagiri. This was because a strong system was present over the Bay of Bengal till Friday. Unfortunately, this system moved eastwards on Sunday, weakening the south-west monsoon currents.
According to IMD officials, the pressure gradient required for good rains has fallen again and the heavy showers that were experienced in Goa and parts of costal Maharashtra for the past two-three days have also decreased. Pre-monsoon activities in Mumbai have remained limited too. Similar showers and thunderstorms will continue but we dont see an immediate development of heavy showers in the city either, Sathidevi said.
Meanwhile, humidity in Mumbai has been progressively increasing, touching 97 per cent and 66 per cent in Colaba and Santacruz respectively on Monday.
