A recent research has linked activity-based learning with natural growth of brain and it has concluded that the traditional methods of learning makes brain passive.

This was said by Ann Balasuriya, director of Montessori Teacher Training Institute, California, USA, and executive director of International Association of Progressive Montessori here today. She said brains of children were becoming increasingly wired up as they now spend a lot of time watching television or playing computer games or video games.

“It is highly dangerous as far as Montessori system of education goes. We warn parents to give children access to computers not before the age of seven, because at that age, the brain may start behaving passively. So is the case with TV viewing or videogames which are the main reason why a lot of children are becoming passive learners these days,” says Ann, who is in India to train teachers in a 45-day workshop at Patiala.

Speaking on the sidelines of an inauguration ceremony of ABC Montessori school at BRS Nagar, an Americal Montessori chain, she said,”A child learns through activity and interactions which make him take initiatives on his own. It is therefore necessary to tap all the potential of a child that the nature has given him.” Ann adds,”However what is happening is that the children are becoming passive learners with our traditional systems of education and TV and videogames are playing havoc with their lives. Gradually, children become isolated and lose ability to socialise.”

Besides, she says that a study in America has proven that Montessori system helps reduce the addiction in the youth. “It is a major problem in the US and Montessori way of life gives complete satisfaction to all senses and the nervous system becomes relaxed and calm with it,” she explains.
