Monthly reviews on their mind,Mamata ministers go footloose

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s string of surprise visits since she took the oath last Friday doesn’t surprise many considering that she has always been known as a very workaholic person. But what has made everyone sit up and take notice is the frantic pace at which her ministers have been doing rounds of the several offices and government establishments that fall under their ministries.

The ministers are hardly seen at Writers’ Buildings — the state secretariat. Instead they have been criss-crossing various parts of the state. Some are visiting jails, other lands up at a school, some others at stadium or a canal in the remote part of the state.

It seems that Didi’s diktat to her ministers — “Don’t stick to your chairs and prepare assessment reports of several government establishments” — has made them to make surprise visits one after another.

Sources, however, revealed that real reason behind the minister’s enthusiasm and energy stems out from the fear of losing the ministries since the chief minister has made it absolutely clear that monthly performance will count. “Didi has told us that none of us are permanent in our respective ministries. We will stay here as long as our performance is up to the mark in the monthly report cards prepared by her. She has told us that the time of promises is over and now it is the time for us to prove that we can perform,” said a minister who did want to be named.

Since last week,Minister of State of Sports (Independent Charge) Madan Mitra has visited several sporting complexes — from Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium),Netaji Indore Stadium to Subhash Sarovar — to get a first-hand account of the condition of the stadia.

“Didi has asked me to submit a status report on the condition of the sports complexes, which are supposed to be of world class facilities. She also wants me to put in suggestions and recommendations for a consolidated sports policy which will soon be drafted,” said Mitra.

Environment minister Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar on Thursday was seen touring the entire stretch of VIP road along which the wetlands and water bodies have been illegally filled up. On Friday,he visited Subhash Sarobar in Beleghata and spent some time listening to the locals about “illegal constructions” that has allegedly causing environmental pollution there. On Saturday,he is scheduled to visit his constituency,Mahishadal,to review Hijli Tidal Canal, the lifeline of the industrial belts of Haldia and Mahishadal.

“The chief minister wants all of us to conduct inquiries and prepare status reports so that the next plan of action can be decided and accordingly money will be allotted in the next budget. As of now we are visiting places, taking our own notes and consulting her as and when we are feeling it necessary,” said Dastidar.

Youth Affairs minister Ujjwal Biswas is no exception. He has already visited Moulali Yuva Kendra and office of Kolkata District Youth Officer. Similarly Food and Supplies minister Jyotipriyo Mullick has visited the Food Department twice this week. Tourism minister Rachpal Singh and Minister for Welfare of Women and Children Sabitri Mitra are visiting districts to prepare their reports. Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim has been holding a couple of meetings with Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee.

Javed Ahmed Khan, who is in charge of the sensitive fire and emergency services department that came under huge criticism during his predecessor’s tenure, made a surprise visit to the Fire Services building at Kyd Street and thoroughly examined the facilities available there.
