On the concluding day of the three-day Surana and Surana National Trial Advocacy Moot Court Competition conducted at the Moot Court Hall,Department of Law,Panjab University on Sunday,engrossing arguments were witnessed on various aspects of criminal procedural law.
The finals were judged by a panel of judges including Justice MMS Bedi and Justice Surya Kant of Panjab and Haryana High Court,and Justice Varinder Singh of Jammu and Kashmir High Court. University V-C Professor RC Sobti was also present.
They delievered meticulous judgments and pointed out the errors of the contestants,guiding them throughout the competition by giving valuable suggestions regarding the actual court room procedures.
Justice Singh said: You (a lawyer) can take your ship on either side. Prosecution has to demolish the wall of the defence and erect its own wall on that platform.
He also laid emphasis on the general principles of cross examination. Justice Surya Kant appreciated efforts of the contestants and gave valuable hints on the actual procedure of a criminal trail. Justice Bedi emphasised the need of effective cross-examination of witnesses and said,Once you have made a point,do not lose it. The distance between suspicion and proof is ought to be travelled by the prosecution.
The University Institute of Laws,PURC,Ludhiana emerged victorious and received a prize of Rs 18,000 followed by NUALS (Kochi),Baba Farid Law College (Faridkot) and Institute of Laws,Nirma University (Ahmedabad). Silky Avasthy from PURC Ludhiana was adjudged the Best Student Advocate and the team from NUALS,Kochi was handed over the Spirit of Surana Award.
The Best Memorial award was given to the team from Nirma University,Ahmedabad.
The book by a lecturer of UILS,Panjab University,Dr Amita Verma, Cyber Laws and Crime,published by Central Law Publications,dealing with cyber laws and various dimensions of cyber crimes was also released during the event.
