Trashing the suicide theory of Moradabad police, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has ordered re-investigation into the death of two Dalit sisters who were found burnt to death at their residence last month.
The commission has asked the DIG and the District Magistrate of Moradabad to probe the clues which indicated that the girls were murdered by a mob. The Investigating Officer and SP (City) have been asked to appear before the commission with the progress of the re-investigation on February 7.
NCSC Chairman P L Punia said the DIG,District Magistrate,Circle Officer, the then SHO of City Kotwali police station and the scientific officer of Moradabad appeared before the commission with a probe report on Monday. The role of the DIG,the DM and other officials has been apathetic in handling the matter since the beginning. Their indifferent attitude led to the killing of the girls, Punia said. Their report stated that the girls had committed suicide and that they had arrested five persons for abetment of suicide.
I have sought clarifications from the DIG and the DM regarding the circumstantial evidence. The police report said that the room of the girls,Geeta and Neetu alias Monu, was bolted from inside and there was no other way to enter the room. Besides, they also said that the room of their mother Rajjo Devi was bolted from outside by the girls only. But anyone can enter the room of the victims by scaling the wall and jumping into the courtyard from rear. If the girls had to commit suicide, there was no need to lock their mother in another portion of the house, said Punia.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar Singh, who is the IO,has been directed to look into these aspects,Punia said, adding,The commission would initiate action against officials if the investigation is not done properly.
