‘Morbid obesity is a life threatening disease’

35% or approximately 120 million urban Indians are seriously obese,says, Dr. Pradeep Chowbey.

The Uppals,a business family from Delhi,till recently were sailing through rough times as the entire family was reeling under the effects of morbid obesity. Raghubir Uppal was almost bed- ridden due to his weight issues. Battling life,things became difficult Raghubir both personally and professionally,as he could no longer look after his business.

Not only Raghubir,his wife,Kiran was too suffering from diabetes since 10 years. She had a Body Mass Index (BMI) which was above 40 and no amount of medication and diet control made any difference to her sugar levels.

With their son,Varun Uppal too weighing 155kgs,in his 25th year and also diagnosed with asthma,life had become dreary for the Uppals. Morbid obesity was taking its toll on them- physically,mentally and economically.

But,thanks to the Bariatric surgery in 2008,which Raghubir Uppal went for life completely changed for the Uppals after that. Raghubir Uppal is no more an ‘extremely obese’ man and is leading a healthy and normal life.

Varun Uppal underwent bariatric surgery in 2009. He now weighs around 75kgs and is no longer troubled by asthma and is supportting his father in their family business.

Kiran Uppal finally registered a normal sugar count after her bariatric surgery was conducted in March 2010. She now keeps her sugar levels under control without any medication.

Bariatric surgery gave the Uppals a new lease of life. With no post-surgery medical complications,they are relieved that not only their weight issues but also the other comorbidities have been resolved.

Overweight-morbid obesity is a rising trend as per various studies being performed on the urban and rural population of India to document the incidence of obesity,35% or approximately 120 million urban Indians are seriously obese. “Morbid obesity is a life threatening disease. Every ten extra kilos of weight reduces life by three years,thereby shortening the life span of a person”,says Dr. Pradeep Chowbey.
