Despite increased security, two more attacks on North-East residents in the city were reported in Kondhwa area on Sunday evening even as two more arrests have been made.
On Monday, police arrested two more persons, Nilesh Tanaji Sathe and Mohsin Aslam Shaikh, in connection with the attack on a Manipuri student in Kondhwa on August 11. The nine suspects arrested earlier were released on bail as the cops surrendered their custody, claiming that inquiry was over and the recovery process of weapons used for the attack was on.
Police said a group of four-five persons in a car followed Santbahadur Devan (21) and attacked him on NIBM Road around 4.30 am on Sunday. ACP V T Pawar said, "Devan, a native of Darjeeling, was attacked when he was on his way to a restaurant where he works. They stopped him on NIBM Road and forced him into a small alley. They thrashed him and tore his clothes."
As the injuries Devan suffered were not serious, a non-cognisable offence was registered at Kondhwa police station.
Pawar said, "We have got the number of the car from a nearby shop owner and are on the lookout for the suspects."
In the second instance, Mathaimi Laksan Kumsum (29), a resident of Shivnerinagar, was assaulted by three-four persons. They hit him from behind and kicked his legs. No serious injuries were reported."
Meanwhile, investigations revealed that Mohsin Shaikh and Nilesh Sathe, who runs a stall in Kondhwa, were among the group of miscreants who barged into the house of Manipuri student Rokuozetuo Ltu (25) at Wajir Cascade, Kondhwa on Saturday.
Senior police inspector Prasad Hasabnis said, "The suspects were provoked after watching the doctored video clip on Assam riots. Mohsin was also among them. His friend Nilesh accompanied him during the attack, and is booked on charges of unlawful assembly." An offence has been registered at Cantonment police station against unidentified persons for circulating the doctored video clip in Camp area
